The strong public interest, and desire for immersive experiences, is probably the most obvious trend in the entertainment industry in recent years. In this context, audio has a major role to play and new techniques like ambisonics, object-based, head-tracking and binauralization bring a signifcant contribution to its immersiveness potential.
Ambisonics is a full-sphere surround sound format that - in addition to the horizontal plane, it covers sound sources above and below the listener. Unlike other multichannel surround formats, its transmission channels do not carry speaker signals but rather calculates outputs using sound objects.
PENMAC use audio tools that spatialize and render audio in real-time allowing the flexibility to allow you to pan dynamically - mono, stereo or surround sources into a High Order Ambisonics encoded 3D sound scene.
These techniques are used amongst others in post production for film studio composition, concert diffusion, virtual reality audio for video games, 360 video soundtracks, 3D Audio for broadcast, interactive sound art, live sound mixing, scientific research and development, sound design for film, and for musical theatre environmental sound.
Virtual objects can be controlled on screen, or by a sequencer, a score-following system, or any other algorithmic approach. These objects can easily be linked to any remote control device (tracking systems, tablet, smartphone, joystick, gestural sensors, etc.) through industry standard protocols.

The ambisonics format for capturing, synthesizing, processing, and rendering an auditory environment - is characterized by an order of precision: 1 (also called B-Format) or above (HOA for Higher Order Ambisonics). For each order, a specific level of accuracy and precision is achieved, 1 being the lowest and 7 being the highest. The higher the desired accuracy, the more channel based speaker placements are required in a live environment .
Binaural synthesis is a playback technology that recreates the feel of three-dimensional listening with a pair of headphones or earphones (it does not work directly on speakers). It employs special audio filters that recreate the influence that the shape of our ears and body have on the sounds that surround us. Binaural encoding is particularly useful for personal viewing experiences that do not allow for multi-speaker arrays.

In addition to our Immersive Audio Mixing Engine, we offer custom made processing solutions to keep up with the requirements of this new demanding era in audio production. For example, a sound designer can create a binaural output preview on headphones while on a plane, and a surround speaker arrangement for studio work, while simultaneously creating content for multi-speaker arrangements of the actual show itself which may have speakers by the dozen!
With our tools and expertise, we implement audio post production for video or music, realizing a fully immersive experience which could be for live staging or personal appreciation on regular headphones.
Re-mixing of existing projects into an immersive space is easily achieved from existing audio stems used in a previous stereo production and redirected into the three dimensional space.
In the context of Augmented and Virtual Reality, a spatialized auditory component is essential in creating the sensations of presence and immersion in interactive virtual reality applications.
